Dreamcatchers & Feather Art
Natives believed the night air was filled with good and bad dreams. The legend of the Dream Catcher is that it captures the bad Spirits and filters them, protecting us from evil and letting through only the good dreams. It is believed that each carefully woven web will catch bad spirit dreams and they will perish with the first light of the morning sun. The good spirit dreams will find their way to the center and float down the sacred feathers. Dream Catchers are believed to bless the "sleeping ones" with pleasant dreams, good luck, and harmony throughout their lives. It is how many native people remember lessons in their community and get their visions. It is said that when you get a good night sleep you can remember when the spirit has talked to you.
Our dreamcatchers are handmade using traditional materials... wood, leather, natural feathers, beads and/or semi-precious stones. The web is hand tied using sinew which may or may not be painted. Some will have hand-painted animals or scenes while others are decorated with a wood burner. Feathers are all hand wrapped, arranged and painted by Jan. Many will have sweet grass woven in amongst the feathers. Some people like a dreamcatcher to also represent a loved one or pet so Jan will weave in some of a beloved pet's fur or feathers or threads from a much worn item of clothing. Every dreamcatcher is smudged with sage in the traditional, native way before being offered.
